Crime thriller hit the Mollywood screen in a big way back in 1988. The film was ‘Oru CBI Diary Kurippu’ a sensational murder story by noted Malayalam film director K Madhu. The lead character Sethurama Iyer was played by Mammootty who donned the role of a CBI officer with élan. The film and the star have found a place in history of Malayalam cinema for being one of a kind. It was an immense hit as it was a novel subject and not something with social and political element, that flooded the theatres of the period.

Followed a sequel of the first, two years later. ‘Jagrutha’ with the lead character Sethurama Iyer played by Mammootty and his team of detectives, couldn’t survive at the box office, for being very dull and boring. The story revolved around the death of a film star.

It took 15 years to come up with the third sequel of the film. The makers were cautious not to burn their fingers this time. A long time had passed inbetween and everything around had changed by then. The people esteemed Sethurama Iyer as a legendary character now. The film released as ‘Sethurama Iyer CBI’ in 2004 restored back the glory turning up to be a massive success once again. The story was about atwin-family massacre. Mammootty, K. Madhu and writer SN Swamy got a rebirth through the film.

The fourth sequel of the film is n the making now as ‘Nerariyan CBI’. The team of the film comes together for the fourth time again, creating history in itself. The route and the theme is the same, the adventures of a CBI police officer. It is a scientific and logical exploration into the supernatural. This is something that has never done before in the world of cinema.

K Madhu, the director is thrilled as he makes the same genre film for the fourth time. He still feels the same excitement as he felt while making the first film. Mammootty has aged too in between the long times but his charisma hardly makes it visible.

Sethurama Iyer CBI was basically a concept of Mammootty. Writer SN Swamy had wanted the cop to be aggressive and arrogant guy of Muslim origin. But Mammootty insisted on a Brahmin cop and thus it was.

Though Mammootty considers it to be a boon to be able to work in the film again, on personal level he thinks that he should get rid of the character now. This is because his character in the film is very rigid and he cannot add new facet to it. But as long as the film continues with its spree of success Mammootty has no alternative other than to carry it.

Nerariyan CBI releases during Onam on August.
